Underactive Thyroid Dry Skin
For anyone with an under active thyroid dry skin is one of the many symptoms experienced when overcoming thyroid disorders. This can manifest in many ways; eczema, rashes and flaking skin being just a few, but without doubt the most common complaint is skin that is dry and difficult to hydrate. At the best of times, when you are at the peak of health, your skin can be subject to some harsh punishment from lotions and creams we use everyday but when suffering with a thyroid problem the skin is more prone to becoming dry and in need of some remedial treatment. So what steps can you take to reduce the impact this has on your life?
It is always a good idea to keep clear of any cleansing detergents that are overly alkaline, these include, but are not confined to, soaps and those cleaners that foam on application. They tend to be very harsh on the skin and strip out a lot of natural oils leaving your skin dehydrated which leads ultimately to dry, flaky skin. Choose your cleanser with care, look for those that contain no harsh detergents, keep to gentle types that are ph neutral and have re-hydrating properties.
Another product used regularly, and with no thought as to the possible damage it may cause, is toners. A lot of these contain alcohol, which has a very drying effect on the skin, or fragrances, that are the cause of many skin irritations. Again take great care when purchasing, look for those toners that contain no alcohol and are fragrance free. A soothing, moisturizing ingredient like aloe vera will again re-hydrate rather than strip the skin especially on the face, which is susceptible to harsh products. When exfoliating try to purchase products that are naturally soothing. These will include ingredients like chamomile and aloe vera that are not only soothing but they also moisturize the skin and aid the reduction of puffiness, which is another common symptom of hypothyroidism. You can also easily find moisturizers and anti aging creams that use light, nourishing, ingredients like jojoba, apricot kernel oil, almond oil and sesame seed oil and others using heavier oils like evening primrose, macadamia and avocado. These all natural products penetrate your skin to a greater extent than alcohol and petroleum based products that just sit on the surface having a drying effect on the upper most layer of the skin. As with all products give them a try first and find out which best suits your skin.
Treating an underactive or even overactive thyroid dry skin problem need not be difficult. Just a little research and ultimately purchasing gentle, natural skin products will help your skin look and feel a whole lot better, helping you in overcoming this particular thyroid disorder.
